KARACHI, Jan 5: The provincial government is trying to establish more medical colleges and nursing institutes to meet the shortage of doctors and nursing staff, said Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan on Saturday.

According to an official statement, Mr Khan was speaking at the foundation stone laying of a medical college being established under the auspices of the Sindh health department in Landhi.

The ceremony was held at the Governor’s House.

The governor said he was happy that the project was finally being launched. He said the Sindh chief minister had laid the foundation stone of a medical college in Khairpur and that a second such institution was being set up in Karachi's Landhi area.

Dr Khan said he had as-ked Sindh Health Minister Dr Sagheer Ahmed that medi-cal colleges and nursing institutes be established in the province and that he was ready to extend any assistance needed in that regard.

He said the project was the product of democracy and the policy of reconciliation, for which he congratulated President Asif Ali Zardari and Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain.

He said medical colleges would be set up in every district of the province so that youngsters in those areas got the opportunities to acquire higher education.

The governor said the first law university was also being established in the province, whereas during the past eight to 10 years 20 universities had been set up.

He said the present democratic government was completing its tenure and entering the election process and that the system should continue as it was beneficial for the country.—APP
