RAWALPINDI, Jan 4: A 22-year-old woman was shot dead allegedly by her former fiance here on Thursday night.

The mother and younger sister of the victim were also injured in the attack, the family of the deceased said.

The deceased woman’s mother told Dawn from her hospital bed that she along with her husband and two daughters were at their home in the Amarpura locality when the accused, whose engagement with her elder daughter had ended three months back, came in along with two other men.

“After entering the house, the accused started shouting that he would teach us a lesson for ending the engagement. He pulled out a pistol and fired at my daughter and then shouted at her father,” the victim’s mother added.

“As my daughter fell down, the man pointed his pistol at my husband. On seeing this, my younger daughter came to our rescue, but she was also shot and injured. Realising that the attacker would not spare anyone in the house, I pounced on him,” she said.

The mother of the deceased sustained head injury after being beaten with the butt of the pistol by the accused.

Her younger daughter was shot in the leg.

The attacker managed to escape after killing the woman and injuring the other inmates of the house.

The victim’s mother said that she had to end her daughter’s engagement about three months back after coming to know that her fiance did not enjoy a good character.

One of the cousins of the deceased woman added that the accused had been hurling threats of dire consequences on the family.

The accused worked at a garment factory in Koral, where the deceased woman was also employed.

The body was taken to the District Headquarters Hospital while the injured are receiving treatment at the Benazir Bhutto Hospital.

The concern is that if the government is thinking of cutting costs through the merger, we might even lose the functionality levels we currently have.
