HYDERABAD, Jan 13: The Sindh Chamber of Agriculture (SCA) has condemned the attitude of sugar mill owners who have gone to the court of law over the matter of sugarcane price.

The SCA, at its weekly meeting held here on Sunday, said the mill owners should have resolved the problem by entering into a dialogue with the growers.

It urged the federal and Sindh governments to ensure the export of sugar, lying with the mill owners, and refund the amount of duty, paid on import of sugar from India.

This would help mill owners to dispose of the pending stock, the meeting said.

The meeting resolved that the growers who had cultivated two crops on the same land were required to pay only Rs200 per annum as the land tax to the government and they did not have to pay separate land tax for both the crops.

It further resolved the sugarcane growers were not required to pay land tax on sugarcane for two years as it was an 18-month crop.

Syed Qamaruzzaman Shah presided over the meeting.

TEACHERS: The All Sindh Teachers Association (ASTA) on Monday expressed its concern over the commencement of teachers’ training workshops and other training programmes on the eve of annual examinations.

A leader of the ASTA, Kazi Aminuddin, in a press statement, said that annual examinations for the secondary and higher secondary schools would be held from Feb 2, and, therefore, the teachers’ training programmes should be rescheduled after the examinations.

He said that the teachers, who were undergoing training, should be sent back to their respective schools enabling them to prepare the students for their annual examinations.
