LAHORE, Dec 25: The Young Doctors Association has rejected the ongoing process for the election of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC).

Talking to the media on Tuesday, YDA leaders Dr Talha Sherwani, Dr Aslam Rao, Dr Rana Sohail, Dr Zahid Wazir and Dr Khuda Bakhsh said the PMDC election was being held to accommodate the blue-eyed people. They said recently the PMDC announced that it would hold its election next month, without preparing the voter list, which is mandatory under the laid down rules.

YDA leaders said Rs100,000 had been fixed as nomination fee to deprive young doctors of an opportunity to participate in the election.

Dr Sherwani said “so-called” PMDC Vice-President Dr Asim Husain was trying to hijack the council. “Dr Husain, the owner of a private medical college in Karachi, is not from the teaching cadre. He is serving as vice-president of the council in violation of the rules,” he alleged.

He said the PMDC was a government body regulating medical education in Pakistan and its reputation guaranteed jobs for doctors all over the world. According to Section 35 of the PMDC (Amendment) Act 2012, the council has been dissolved and its president and vice-president will work as chairman and vice-chairman under an interim set-up, he said.

“Now the chairman, vice-chairman and the executive committee will conduct the council election under an interim set-up,” Dr Sherwani remarked. He said the executive committee made another committee to conduct the election on October 3 in violation of Section 36B of the PMDC (Amendment) Act 2012.

“Dr Husain and his group in the executive committee were forcing the PMDC president to resign so that he can conduct the election on his whims,” Dr Sherwani said.
