WASHINGTON, Dec 19: The United States will continue to work with Pakistan to provide adequate information to the public about anti-polio campaigns so that attacks on health workers could be stopped, the State Department said.

Asked to comment on attacks on polio vaccination teams in Pakistan, State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland noted that such violence amounted to denying basic health facilities to the country’s children.

“Our sympathy goes out to the victims of the violence against healthcare workers in Pakistan and … to the children there who are right now being denied access to basic health services and interventions,” she said. “Any attack on health workers anywhere in the world is unacceptable.”

The US officials insisted on the need to respect “the safety and sanctity of health workers” so that they could continue to provide basic healthcare facilities to the people.

“The provision of healthcare … should be kept neutral in any kind of a conflict or disagreement,” she said.
