KARACHI, Jan 10: The Nazim of Karachi, Naimatullah Khan, has expressed concern over the growing problem of leakages in water and sewerage lines. He directed the concerned engineers to leave their offices and schedule a daily visit of their respective areas to solve all the related problems with personal interest.

The Nazim’s remarks came during his visit to North Nazimabad, Liaquatabad and Site towns on Thursday. He was accompanied by the EDO, Water and Sewerage Wing, Brig (r) Sardar Javed Ashraf, Chief Engineers, Salman Chandio and Khalid Malik, besides other officials. The visit was aimed at reviewed water and sewerage problems in the towns.

Naimatullah Khan issued directives to the concerned officials to solve the sewerage problem in Block B of North Nazimabad.

Briefing the Nazim, the officials maintained that sewerage problems were normally caused mainly due to the defective pipelines laid in multi-storeyed buildings. Most of these buildings, they added, had their pipelines connected with storm water drains illegally.

The Nazim asked the officials to issue notices to the owners of such buildings for the removal of illegal connections. He also called for the solution of similar problems in Hyderi, Block-D and Buffer Zone’s Block A.

During his visit to Liaquatabad Town, the Nazim asked the engineers to replace certain sewerage lines in the town and carry out repair work where needed on priority basis.

Taking a serious note of illegal water connections to cattle pens and commercial units in Metroville, Site, the Nazim ordered their removal within 15 days and directed the officials to examine the possibility of an alternative water supply line to the locality.—APP
