KARACHI, Nov 16: Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) put up a stunning display on Friday to embarrass National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) by an innings and nine runs on the penultimate day of the four-day President’s Trophy Grade-I National Cricket Championship match at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad.

Wapda, who suffered a surprise 17-run defeat against Port Qasim Authority (PQA) in the sixth round, not only handed NBP their third defeat in seven matches but also ended their slim hopes of reaching the final.

NBP, who began their second innings with a deficit of 122 runs, faced just 33.3 overs before being all out for a pathetic 113 with only Pakistan opener Nasir Jamshed making a notable contribution of 56 (68 balls, eight boundaries).

The wickets were shared around by Test fast bowler Junaid (3-29), paceman Azhar Attari (3-19) and slow left-armer Zulfiqar Babar (3-32) as just Hammad Azam (19) and Wahab Riaz (10) managed o emulate Nasir in reaching double figures.

Wapda’s second win lift them above NBP in the standings.

Leaders Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and second-placed Habib Bank Limited (HBL), inspired by a brilliant Younis Khan century, were also poised for victories in their respective matches.

SNGPL had Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) on the ropes at 60-4 in their second innings after setting them a target of 279 at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Left-arm seamer Samiullah Khan Niazi has taken all three wickets falling to a bowler with Shoaib Khan being run out.

PIA’s hopes now firmly rest on the shoulders of ex-Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik who is batting with 26.

Earlier, SNGPL declared their second innings at 148-5 after Test batsman Azhar Ali (45 off 117 balls, three fours) and Ali Waqas (64 off 109, eight boundaries and one six) added 85 for the third wicket.

Bottom-placed United Bank Limited (UBL) reached 114-3 in pursuit of a daunting 429-run run chase against the formidable HBL side at the Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi were also comfortably placed against UBL at the Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi. They need another 315 on he Saturday’s final day with seven wickets standing.

HBL, who began day three at 175-4, declared at 376-8 after their skipper Younis Khan struck his second century of the championship. The former Pakistan captain compiled 133 from 217 balls in 334 minutes of concentration. His 40th first-class century was embellished with 18 boundaries.

Usman Salahuddin also batted to score 50 (118 balls, five fours) while helping Younis put on 124 for the fifth wicket. Wicket-keeper Humayun Farhat followed his innings-saving 79 in the first innings with a belligerent 54 off only 29 balls with six fours and two sixes.

UBL captain and former Pakistan paceman Shabbir Ahmed finished with four wickets for 100 runs.

Discarded Pakistan Test opener Khurram Manzoor stroked a superb 152 (276 balls, 20 boundaries) to give PQA a handy 55-run lead on the first innings against Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) at the KRL Stadium in Rawalpindi.

PQA, who were 217-5 at stumps on Thursday in reply to the hosts’ 289, eventually made 344 before their bowlers reduced KRL to 135-9 in the second innings.

State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) earned a 59-run lead against Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) before collapsing to 140-9 in their second innings at the Diamond Club Ground in Islamabad.

ZTBL, who resumed at 19807, were all out for 239 with the seventh-wicket partnership between Zohaib Khan (49) and Sohail Tanvir (35) yielding 53 runs.

Saad Altaf, the 28-year-old Margala-born left-arm paceman, continued his good firm this season with six for 71. But his feat was upstaged by Pakistan left-armer Sohail Tanvir who claimed three wickets for 25 in SBP’s second innings to extend his match haul to 10-86.
