PESHAWAR, Jan 6: The police opened fire on a van carrying Afghan refugees and injured three persons on Ring Road on Monday.

Sources told Dawn that the van (IDT-1305), coming from Phandu to Torkham, hit a pedestrian on Ring Road near Dir Colony Chowk and sped away.

The pedestrian died on the spot and the body was sent to the mortuary of Khyber Medical College.

The police after getting information about the incident, signalled the van to stop, but the driver did not stop. The police opened indiscriminate fire on the van and injured Zulaikha, wife of Aman; Umara Khan, son of Faiz; and a minor boy.

The injured were taken to the Lady Reading Hospital. When contacted, the Yakatoot police denied occurrence of the incident.—Bureau
