LONDON, Nov 8: Barcelona slumped to surprise defeat 2-1 at Celtic on Wednesday but Manchester United reached the knockout stages after coming from behind to beat Braga 3-1 in a wild night of Champions League action.

Last year’s finalists Bayern Munich rocketed closer to progression after a 6-1 thrashing of Lille and defending champion s Chelsea needed a last-gasp Victor Moses header to win 3-2 over Shakhtar Donetsk.

Celtic gave themselves the best anniversary present as four-time champions Barca wasted their first chance to reach the Champions League last 16 after the Scottish champions exposed their continued defensive frailties with non-stop energy and physicality.

A day after the hosts celebrated their 125th birthday, Victor Wanyama headed Celtic in front in the 21st minute and teenage substitute Tony Watt rounded off another swift counterattack in the 83rd prompting wild celebrations in Glasgow.

Lionel Messi pulled one back in injury time for his side, but it was a case of too little, too late.

With two games to go, Barca top Group ‘G’ with nine points, two more than Celtic.

Benfica moved into third place by beating Spartak Moscow 2-0 on a pair of Oscar Cardozo goals.

United came from behind to win 3-1 at Braga after a Robin van Persie strike, Wayne Rooney’s penalty and Javier Hernandez’s scrappy goal in the final 10 minutes sealed a knockout stage berth as group winners following a painful early exit last term.

A power-cut after Alan’s opening penalty for the Portuguese hosts had held up the Group ‘H’ game for around 10 minutes in the second half but United roared back.

United have an insurmountable 12 points in the group with Galatasaray’s 3-1 win in Cluj courtesy a hat-trick from Burat Yilmaz left second spot wide open.

Group ‘E’ remains incredibly tight after Shakhtar missed out on advancing to the next round after substitute Moses scored the winner for Chelsea with virtually the last touch of the game, heading in a corner to spark wild scenes at Stamford Bridge.

Shakhtar and Chelsea each have seven points, with the Ukrainian side ahead on goal difference.

Serie A champions Juventus are a point behind after beating Danish club FC Nordsjaelland 4-0

Peruvian striker Claudio Pizarro bagged a 15-minute first-half hat-trick to help Bayern top Group ‘F’ with nine points alongside Valencia, 4-2 victors at home to BATE Borisov thanks to Sofiane Feghouli’s brace.
