HYDERABAD, Jan 5: The chairman, Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority (SIDA), Abdul Haq, has said that the “parchi” system and political interference was responsible for destroying the irrigation system of the province.

He said this while speaking at a meet-the-press programme at the Hyderabad Press Club on Saturday.

He claimed that the SIDA would ensure equitable distribution of irrigation water which would go a long way in boosting crop production.

He said the British Raj had given the best irrigation system to this region but just like other departments deterioration had also seeped into our irrigation system with the passage of time.

He said the “parchi” system had destroyed our multi-billion rupees irrigation network.

He claimed that the SIDA had been created with a view to ensuring the active participation of the growers to improve the irrigation system.

He claimed that the SIDA was an independent organization and no work would be undertaken without the consent of the growers.

He disclosed that so far farmers organizations had been formed on 100 distributaries under the new system out of which 57 organizations had already become functional.
