JAMMU, Jan 4: Fewer people were killed in Indian-occupied Kashmir last year despite a rise in tensions with Pakistan, said an Indian government official on Saturday.
“It can be attributed to various reasons, including mounting international pressure on Pakistan, troop mobilisation along the border and elections in Pakistan,” the state government’s information director, K.B. Jandial, told Reuters on Saturday.
He said 3,166 people were killed in rebel violence in 2002, down more than 10 percent from the previous year. Almost a third of those killed last year were civilians.—Reuters
