KOHAT, Jan 2: More than 50 kidnapped people paid ransom to the kidnappers through the administration to secure their release here in 2002.

According to the annual police report issued on Thursday, 120 people were killed and 134 injured. Of the 242 persons charged in the cases, 180 were arrested.

During the year, 50 women were kidnapped and eight were killed.

Following the governor’s orders to control kidnapping, 327 proclaimed offenders were arrested and eight persons were killed in encounters, including an assistant sub-inspector, a constable and an official of an intelligence agency.

The police rounded up 12 kidnappers who are being interrogated.

Deputy Inspector-General Ghulam Mohammad on a number of occasions requested the government to ask the political administrations of Darra Adam Khel and Orakzai Agency to hand over those involved in kidnappings for ransom. The DIG also sent the names of the kidnappers but no action was taken.

The governor had promised to do away with the tribal status of Darra Adam Khel but he failed to enforce his orders.

Under the new system, the police earned more than Rs2.8 million from 21,262 traffic violators.

In 116 traffic accidents, 41 people were killed and 184 seriously injured.

More than 1,000kg of drugs was seized.

Although arms carriers managed to ferry huge consignments to Punjab and Sindh, with alleged connivance of the police, from Darra Adam Khel, some weapons were seized from the smugglers. In most of the cases the smugglers escaped.

The police seized 138 kalashnikovs, 15 kalakovs, two sten guns, a rocket launcher, 37 hand-grenades, a light machine gun, 321 rifles, 583 pistols, 529 chargers of kalashnikov and 28,237 cartridges. In all, 3,862 FIRs were registered.
