ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira said that the Supreme Court’s verdict in the Asghar Khan case had validated and vindicated PPP’s stance that elections were rigged in 1990.

Kaira said the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) had always raised its voice against such wrongdoing and malpractices in the past.

Speaking to a private television channel, the information minister said the PPP was in favour of conducting an impartial investigation by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) against those involved in this undemocratic and unconstitutional act.

Furthermore, he said that no institution or individual was above the law and that a probe would be initiated irrespective of the suspect’s political status or affiliation.

In reply to a question, he expressed the optimism that an independent Election Commission would ensure transparent and fair general elections in the country.

The information minister reiterated that the PPP believed in the politics of reconciliation as the country cannot afford political confrontation.

He added that determined and consistent efforts were needed to face the country’s challenges.

While answering another question, Kaira said that the operation in Waziristan had nothing to do with the upcoming general elections which would be held on time.

To another question, he replied that the government always respected the courts’ verdicts and strived for harmonious relations between the state institutions.
