Rapist gets death

CHAKWAL, Oct 17: A man accused of raping a seven-year-old girl was sentenced to death on Wednesday after the court found him guilty.

The culprit, Naveed Haider, a resident of Multan Khurd Village in Tehsil Talagang was charged on February 18 with sexual assault. The girl was a student of the 2nd grade.

After trial for almost eight months, Additional District and Sessions Judge Talagang Rana Zahoor Ahmad sentenced him to death and imposed a fine of Rs400,000. —Correspondent

Operation against factories

RAWALPINDI, Oct 17: Commissioner Imdadullah on Wednesday postponed operation against illegal factories located in the residential areas for four days on the request of Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI).

The operation was launched on Tuesday night, and a team in this regard  tried to seal three factories in Bangash Colony but the workers and owners of the factories resisted the move.

The CDGR asked the local police to provide manpower for the protection of the team. But they refused and suggested to the CDGR team to come in the morning.

However, in the morning, RCCI delegation contacted the commissioner and managed to get a breather for the illegal factories.

The six-member team comprising officials of Rawal Town Municipal Administration, Labour, Industries departments, Rescue 1122 and Civil Defence was constituted by the City District Government Rawalpindi (CDGR).

The team was handed over a list of 99 illegal factories that were not registered with the CDGR and had failed to adopt fire safety measures.—A Reporter

Education system

ISLAMABAD, Oct 17: The Japan International Corporation Agency (Jica) on Wednesday assured its support to Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) in strengthening education system.

This assurance was given by the senior official of Jica during their meeting with the Vice Chancellor of Allama Iqbal Open University Prof Dr Nazir Ahmed Sangi held in Tokyo, said a press release received here.

Jica also ensured availability of education facilities in the Pakistan's less developed regions.—APP
