KARACHI: Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Sami produced a sterling performance to claim seven wickets for 61 runs but despite his heroics PIA dominated the second day of their third-round President’s Trophy Grade-I National Cricket Championship fixture against Port Qasim Authority (PQA) at the National Stadium here on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old speedster, who had overnight figures of four or 48, claimed three of the last four wickets PIA lost for the addition of 92 runs to their Monday’s total of 242-6.

Tahir Khan, who fell to Mohammad Talha, made an invaluable 51 off 108 balls with six boundaries and was ably supported by Anwar Ali (38 not out) in an eighth-wicket partnership of 67 after Shoaib Khan was dismissed by Sami for 67 after starting the day on 61.Wicket-keeper Mohammad Salman excelled with five catches.

The PQA, in reply to PIA’s 334, found themselves in trouble at 47-3 before left-handers Umar Amin and Usman Tariq revived the innings in a fine stand of 95 until Umar’s entertaining innings of 61 was terminated by left-arm seamer Najaf Shah, who has taken three for 46 in 15 overs. Umar’s 77-ball effort at the crease contained 11 boundaries.

Usman (46 off 82 balls, eight fours) and Salman (18) negotiated the final 40 minutes of the day’s action to guide the PQA to 178-4 by close of play.

State Bank were just three runs away from taking first-innings lead as they reached 250-6 after hosts United Bank were all out for 252 at the UBL Sports Complex.

Skipper Kashif Siddique led the way by striking 14 boundaries in his attractive 87-ball knock of 80. Fellow left-hander Adnan Raees batted with common sense to score an unbeaten 62 off 131 balls by stumps.

Earlier, the bankers added 23 runs to their overnight tally of 229-9 with Mohammad Sami finishing undefeated with 71.

The Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL), who were 111-3 in the rain-hit fixture against National Bank at the Jinnah Stadium in Sialkot, on Monday lost ground on day two.

Uzair-ul-Haq was the tormentor with five of the last wickets to the Karachi-born paceman as the SNGPL limped to 195 all out in 55.3 overs. Umar Akmal made 40 while Pakistan Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq scored 29.

National Bank are already in front at 218-3 with Nasir Jamshed (40 off 48 balls, six fours), Sami Aslam (63 off 141, seven fours) and Bilal Munir (35) the batsmen out. Hammad Azam (45) and skipper Fawad Alam (29) have so far put on 61 for the fourth wicket.

Habib Bank cashed in on their advantage of winning the toss by opting to field first against Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore where play on the opening day was completely washed out.

In the 34 overs available, Habib Bank had reduced the ZTBL to 78-6 with Ehsan Adil, Kamran Hussain and captain Younis Khan sharing all wickets between them.

The Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) had made 113-3 after being asked to bat first by Wapda in their clash at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad after a blank Monday.
