LAHORE: The Government of West Pakistan has withdrawn the externment order issued on 12 Karachi students following an assurance by Mr Siddiq Dawood and Mr S.M. Sohail that “the students’ community in Karachi would not indulge in any activity prejudicial to discipline and good order”.

A Press Note issued here yesterday afternoon says: “The Governor interviewed the Commissioner and the DIG of Karachi, and received a deputation of Karachi students today. In view of this assurance of Mr Siddiq Dawood and Mr S.M. Sohail, and also talk with the students, the Governor was pleased to direct that the externment order may be withdrawn.”

The conference was attended by the Provincial Education Minister, Mrs Mahmuda Salim, Chief Secretary Syed Fida Hasan, Home Secretary M.H. Shah, Commissioner of Karachi Afzal Agha and DIG of Karachi Police Mian Bashir Ahmed.

The meeting which started at 9.30am lasted till 11am during which other problems of Karachi students are also understood to have been discussed.

The Governor is believed to have assured the students’ deputation, which was led by Rana Azhar Ali Khan, chairman of the Inter-Collegiate Body, that admission would be given to the externed students in Karachi colleges.

When contacted, some of the Karachi students who met the Governor and the Provincial Minister for Education at the Governor’s House, expressed their satisfaction at the decision. They said they had made a request for unconditional withdrawal of orders to which the Government had acceded. They further said that the Government had promised to consider sympathetically some other demands, particularly reduction of fees.—Staff Correspondent
