LAHORE, Jan 1: The Supreme Court on Wednesday suspended the orders of the Lahore High Court granting exclusive rights for plying 70-seat capacity buses on route 32 (from the Lahore railway station to Youhanabad) and temporarily allowed the plying of minibuses and wagons on the route.
Justice Munir A. Sheikh fixed Jan 13 for further hearing when the matter would be heard by a bench of the Supreme Court.
Petitioner Muhammad Younas while challenging the high court order argued that the authorities had amended the motor vehicle ordinance on Oct 17, 2002, banning all minibuses and wagons being plied on route 32. The petitioner alleged that the company that was alloted the route was owned by foreign minister Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri. He argued that the impugned amendment was a violation of principles of free trade.
PROCESSION: The Lahore High Court Bar Association will take out a protest procession against the arrest of High Court Bar Association Rawalpindi Bench’s president Chaudhry Muhammad Akram on Thursday (today).
The Bar officials said the arrest of Chaudhry Akram and his subsequent release following an inquiry was one of the most deplorable incidents in the history of Bar associations.
They warned of action in case no departmental inquiry was held against the culprits involved in this arrest.
The Bar further demanded the constitution of a high-level committee to probe the incident and locate the culprits.
