DACCA: Mr H. S. Suhrawardy stressed here today the need for “a democratic constitution” which should recognise “the supremacy of the will of the people”.

Mr Suhrawardy was addressing a largely attended public meeting presided over by a former Chief Minister of East Pakistan, Mr Nurul Amin, at the Outer Stadium here this afternoon.

Before dispersing peacefully, the meeting adopted a number of resolutions.

Mr Suhrawardy said that the constitution of a country “should uphold the people’s right to choose their own Government.”

Appealing [to] the people to remain united, he said the way to achieve a democratic constitution was difficult and the people would be required to cross many hurdles. The greatest weapon for the people was, he added, unity, strength and faith.

Mr Suhrawardy believed that the unity and strength of the people based on “Iman” was sure to win the object, however powerful the opposition might be.

He regretted the accusations levelled against him and others from time to time and added that it did not help anyone except making them all the more popular with the people. He said that the “increasing popularity” of the leaders was the indication of the people’s feeling against the Constitution.

He said that the present Constitution had provision for amendment, but the process was such that it was difficult to achieve the changes. He said that the Constitution could not be amended without the assent of the President.—Agencies
