Wheat sowing target

GUJRANWALA, Dec 30: Wheat sowing target for the district has been fixed at 529,000 matric tons, while the Agricultural Department has supplied 37,440 sacks of wheat seed to farmers.

This was stated by the district agricultural officer in Kamoki on Sunday.

He said farmers had been allowed to grow wheat varieties — MH-97, Uqab-2000, Chenab-2000, Punjab-96, Pasban-90, Inqlab-91, Iqbal-2000, Bahawalpur-97, Panjnad and Bhakkar-2001. The farmers growing prohibited varieties would be taken to task, he warned.

PROTEST: The Markazi Anjuman-i-Tajiran and the Commuters Association took out a procession on Sunday in protest against the Regional Transport Authority for increasing transport fares.

The protesters, carrying banners and placard, chanted slogans against the RTA secretary after parading on Kot Noora Road and the GT Road.

They said some 400 public vehicles of the Transport Society Gujranwala were plying between Wazirabad and Kamoki. The RTA secretary had enhanced the fares thrice a year with the connivance of TSG wagon owners, they said.

They said the RTA secretary and the district administration should have sought objections from commuters and citizens before increasing the fares, but they could not do so.

They alleged that wagon owners were also involved in overloading and overcharging, but the RTA or the district administration was not taking any action in this regard.

POLICE CLAIM: Wahando police claim to have arrested the killers of eight people from Pindi Bhattian on Sunday and recovered three Kalashnikovs and two pistols from their possession.

Reports said the Liaqat group of Wahando had killed eight men of the rival Khalid Group — former union council chairman Chaudhry Tufail, his son, Riffat, nephews Mahmood and Fiaz, and other relatives Riaz, Saeed, Rafiq and Yousaf — some one-and-a-half years ago.

Police registered a case against Liaqat, Faisal, Shahbaz and accomplices and arrested Liaqat. The remaining accused were declared proclaimed offenders.

On a tip off, the police arrested Faisal, Shahbaz and others from Pindi Bhattian.
