KARACHI: Mubarak Mungeri remembered

Published December 31, 2002

KARACHI: The fourteenth death anniversary of well-known poet Mubarak Mungeri was observed on Sunday.

Iqbal Majeedi, his son, organized a meeting of writers and poets at his residence which was quite well attended with Ali Haider Malik as the compere. Malik was a close associate of the late poet while working for an Urdu paper.

Mubarak, author of several poetry collections including Sehra Say Gulistan Tak, Boojho to Janey, and Sailab-i-Khoon based on the bloodshed in Dhaka (1970-71), had suffered the pain of two migrations — from India to East Pakistan and then to Karachi.

His latest poetry collection, Majeedi, was said to appear soon. Boojho to Janey is a collection of versified pen sketches he wrote for the paper.

Ali Haider Malik narrated the circumstance in which those poems had been written and also the personal qualities of M.M. - his modesty, humility, poetic command and courage of conviction.

Those who spoke included Ishaq Hashmi and Azfer Rizvi; Mah Talaat Zahedi from Multan was among the poets who later recited their verses.

Among the poets were Wazahat Naseem, Shakeel Akhtar, Shamim Manzar, Yawar Aman, Jazib Qureshi, Manzer Ayyubi, Azer Hafeez, Azam Behzad, Rafiuddin Raz, Ameerul Islam Hashmi, Javed Manzer, Fauqia Mushtaq, and Rukhsana Saba who also conducted the mushaira.—H.A.
