COLOMBO, Sept 27: India has issued two statements in as many days denying a series of reports in the Sri Lankan media that Indian missiles are aimed at Sri Lanka’s strategic installations, and that the 1000 mw nuclear power plant coming up at Kudankulam in south India, is a threat to life in Sri Lanka.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Indian High Commission said: “These reports are completely baseless and fabricated. India has a longstanding indigenous missile development programme. This programme is defensive in nature and is not directed against any country.”

A report in the controversial website Lankaweb in August, which was reproduced by other websites and sections of the Lankan print media, had said that India’s long-range Agni missiles targeted Lanka’s strategic installations such as the Colombo and Hambanthota ports, the Katunayaka, Ratmalana and Mattala airports, the military headquarters, the Norochcholai coal-fired power plant and the Kerawalapitiya-Kelanitissa oil-fired power plant.
