HARIPUR: Probe into fake case demanded

Published December 29, 2002

HARIPUR, Dec 28: A resident of Malikpura locality, Shafqat Mehmood, has alleged that he had been implicated in a false case by the police and demanded that the inspector-general should order an inquiry against the SHO of city police station and other officials.

Speaking at a news conference at the press club here the other day, Shafqat, a mechanic, said he had a dispute with his neighbours, Wajid, Rafi and Shafqat, sons of Baboo Ashraf, who had blocked the passage to his house by erecting a wall.

He distributed the copies of a report he had lodged with the police station and said his neighbours beat him severely when he tried to stop them.

He accused the SHO and other police officials of siding with his opponents and not taking action against the illegal construction.

In view of the police’s support to his influential opponents, he staged a sit-in, with his minor daughter, on the GT Road on Dec 18, he said and added that police personnel took him to the station, tortured him and took him to the district headquarters hospital.

“The medical officer on duty neither asked any question nor examined me. He had a glance at me from a distance while sitting in his duty room and declared me drunk on the instigation of the SHO,” he alleged and maintained that he had not used any intoxicant.

He demanded that the IG police should order an investigation and punish the officials involved in implicating him in a false case at the behest of his rivals.
