Published December 28, 2002

LAHORE, Dec 27: Water storage in both dams of the country on Friday shrank to 1.396 million acre feet —- Tarbela 1maf and Mangla 0.396maf —- against the total capacity of 11.846maf.

The combined rivers flow maintained low supplies with total hitting 36,300 cusecs —- around 10pc of total requirements of over 300,000 cusecs. The releases were also restricted to 36,000 cusecs as Punjab and Sindh have already closed some canals and are in the process of closing the rest for desilting.

The Tarbela level went down to 1414.30 as inflow hit 16,900 cusecs and outflow 10,000 cusecs. The dam now has only 1maf water against total live capacity of 7.2maf. Similarly, the Jhelum’s inflow at Mangla was 7,400 cusecs and outflow 14,000 cusecs. The dam level stood at 1096.00 —- 56 feet above the dead level of 1040 feet — and the lake contains 0.396maf water against total capacity of 4.464maf. The Chenab and Kabul registered inflow of 6,000 each. According to the barrage report, Jinnah had an inflow of 22,400 and outflow of 18,400 cusecs, Chashma 20,300 and 400, Taunsa 22,000 and 20,500, Guddu 25,700 and 21,500, Sukkur 19,100 and no outflow and Kotri 1,800 with no outflow. — Staff Reporter
