GUJAR KHAN, Sept10: The moharar of Mandra police station, who was arrested in connection with the death of an accused in robbery, was sent on 14 days judicial remand, while three other policemen who had gone underground, after leaving the body of Mir Dad in Holy Family Hospital (HFH) are still at large.

Mir Dad resident of Surgdhan village of tehsil Sohawa was picked up by the Mandra police some days back and kept for interrogation at a torture cell at the police station.

On Sunday morning, according to the police he had inflicted injury to his throat, while he was taken to a toilet in a privately run torture cell of Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Malik Fiaz.

The victim was taken to RHC Mandra for treatment but the medical officer said that the condition of Mir Dad was critical and referred him to HFH Rawalpindi, where he expired before reaching the hospital but his body was abandoned there by the ASI.

Later, a case was registered against ASI Malik, constables Ehtisham, Adnan and Moharar Abdul Shakoor.

Abdul Shakoor after appearing in the court of judicial magistrate in Gujar Khan, said before the reporters that he as moharar of the police station was not responsible for what happened outside the police station and he was being dragged in the case.

Running of torture cells at rented lodgings of police officials in Gujar Khan police circles is an open secret, which are known as ‘tuition centres’ — a police term.

These tuition centres are used for extracting money from innocent ‘students’ or they have to face the wrath of their ‘teachers’ who are well trained in teaching bitter lessons.

The death of Mir Dad due to torture in one such tuition centre exposed lack of any mechanism of inspections and supervisions on the part of immediate higher authorities, who feel complacent in suspending or reinstating their sub-ordinates on the signals of their political mentors.

The residents of the area have urged the chief minister Punjab, Mian Shahbaz Sharif to purge the police of the ‘black sheep’.
