ISLAMABAD, December 26: Saeed-ul-Haq moved into the quarterfinal of the 4th All-Pakistan Sirajul Haq Memorial Open Tennis Championship at the PTF Complex but not before being made to sweat by Peshawar’s Ghulam Rasool.

One of eight sons of late Siraj in whose memory the tournament is being organised, Saeed had to toil for nearly two hours to score a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over his fighting opponent. In the quarters he will now face Inam Gul.

Also making the last eight were Shahzad Samad Khan who won after his rival Kamran Khalil had to quit because of injury and Muhammad Shafiq, a 7-5, 6-3 winner over Ikram-ul-Haq, another son of Siraj.

Shafiq now has tough quarterfinal against top seed Aqeel Khan while Shahzad will play Shahzad Khan.

Aurangzeb Khan set up a meeting in the quarters with second seed Nomi Qamar after edging past Mahmood Khan 6-3, 7-5.

In the girls under-18 event, Zara Omer, Anoosha Aslam, Sara Mahboob and Natasha Afridi advanced to the semifinals by scoring victories over their respective rivals.

Anoosha’s victim was Sara Mansoor whom she beat 4-2, 4-1 while Zara knocked out Zehra Ali Khan 4-2, 4-0. Sara Mahboob struggled to a 4-2, 3-5, 4-1 win over Saman Shahid and Natasha went through after her opponent Mehak Khan did not turn up for her match.
