God has bestowed Baltistan with lofty mountains including K2, the second highest peak in the world, glaciers like Baltoro, which is not only the source of fresh drinking and irrigation water for the people living in Pakistan but also the longest out of the Polar region, thousands of years old cultural and historical heritages like Kharphocho Fort, built on a rock some 400 meters above the surface and, centuries old inscriptions, and pictures of Buddha carved on the mountains and rocks like Budha rock Manthal, in Skardu.
Organic, hidden valleys accommodate dwellers with pristine traditions, customs and living style. Besides, the areas have the second highest plateau in the world situated some 30 kilometers off Skardu in the South covering an area of 300 square kilometers.This lush green and beautiful plateau located on a height of 14,000 meters from the sea level is really a dreamland for nature lovers having flora and fauna, harbouring famous and endangered brown bear, shying golden marmots and twittering Siberian and local birds hundreds of species of medicinal plants and above three different varieties of colorful flowers.
In short, Deosai offered attractions for people belonging to all walks of life and visit for sightseeing, fishing, hunting, boating, rafting, hiking, pony riding, photography, research, mountaineering, trekking, wildlife viewing, and jeep safaris during summer and skiing during winter.The word Deosai is said to be abstracted from Chinese Sanskrit language which means “abode of heaties and deities, gods” while the locals call it “Ghbiyrsa,” meaning to a place to live during summer season.
That would be the reason that hundreds of local and foreign tourists visit this unique land during summer every year.
Mr. Algeard Davrand who was a British political agent in Gilgit in 1889, describes history of Deosai in his book. According to him, preliminarily Deosai was a beautiful large lake which dried up gradually. Then men started living here but the severe weather condition during winter forced them to leave this area.
Deosai has several passes, the famous Burzil Pass is in the south, Burgay Pass in the north and Tchachor Pass is in the north-west and another pass which leads to Kharmang valley. Burgay Pass which is about 18,000 feet high from the sea level is a best view point of world’s second highest Peak K-2, and several another famous and lofty mountains. It is a daylong hiking, go and back from the base of Burgay Pass.
Burgay Pass is a unique and cheap tourists spot from where one can have a spectacular view of world towering and famous mountains. Otherwise, one has to walk seven days to have a view of K-2 from Askoli the last destination in jeep.
Similarly, several mountain rivers and streams flow in Deosai; all streams are full of Himalayan trouts and fishing is the most favorite and famous hobby of the people who visit here.
Shatung River, Kala Pani River (Black water) and Bara Pani River (Big water) are the largest rivers among all producing from its surrounding mountains.
It is said that there are above thirty lakes at various places in Deosai. However, Shoeser Lake is the most famous and big lake among them. This is a unique lake as neither one can see any stream entering in the lake, nor discharging. However, the locals say that spring water come out from the lake and from the banks it seepages and both are invisible. From this lake, if weather is cleared, view of world famous Nanga Parbat Peak is awesome.
Deosai is a place from which one can maneuver different areas. A jeep road leads from Skardu to Astore and one can have a spectacular view of this lake on way which is three hours drive from Skardu. Another jeep road `leads to Minimarg, Dumail and Kamri of Astore district through Murtaza Top which is accessible in four to five hours, but restricted for foreign and non-local tourists because of the area bordering with Srinagar Kashmir. And the same road also leads to Gultari of Skardu district via Tchota Deosai.
Tchota Deosai is more beautiful and lush green, with flowing river, vast vivid green meadows, lakes and gardens of beautiful flower of different colours. After visiting Tchota Deosai, one can forget big Deosai because of its beauty, natural scenic panorama and green deep mountain valleys and vast meadows.
Deosai plateau was declared a national park in 2003 by a joint effort of local government, forest department and Himalayan Wildlife Project and the local communities entitled “Deosai National Park” (DNP) for the purpose to protect its natural resources, echo life and wild life especially the brown bear whose survival was in jeopardy due to hunting by poachers. There are two camp/research offices in Deosai, one is located near Bara Pani and another is near Kala Pani.
If any tourist or researcher intends to view brown bear, the staff of wildlife guide them to the area where the population of brown bear is conserved and this area has been declared a restricted zone by them and no one is allowed to enter this red zone without their permission.
According to the officials of the DNP, before the establishment of the park, the number of brown bear was only 15 but now the population of brown bear has increased up to 65.
Besides a rare population of brown bear, Deosai supports a surprising abundance of wild life, including snow leopard, golden marmot, Ladakhi Uryal, ibex, red fox, wolf, and local and migratory birds such as, waterfowl, ducks, pigeons, snow cocks, pheasants, vultures, dove and lots of different colourful and beautiful birds.
The surrounding mountains of Deosai are covered with snow throughout the year while the plateau itself remains cut off from the rest of the world for eight months due to heavy snow falls during winter season. That would be the reason that during summer, if it rains, the temperature get chilly and one has to wear warm clothes.
Deosai is a hot spot and dreamland for adventure and nature lovers. It unfolds the splendid natural beauty of the landscape, hidden valleys, gardens of beautiful flowers, vast plains of vivid green meadow and medicinal plants . The best season to visit Deosai is late July to late August. So one should do visit this unique plateau to enjoy marvelous and unforgettable moments.
