ISLAMABAD, Aug 29: The Awami National Party complained to Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on Wednesday about non-release of funds committed by the previous prime minister as a special package to compensate the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government for the development work hampered due to the war on terror.

ANP’s Senators Haji Mohammad Adeel and Zahid Khan called on Mr Ashraf at the Prime Minister’s House and discussed financial and administrative issues of the province.

The senators told Dawn that they raised the issues of under-construction Lowari Tunnel, Malakand tunnel, Hasanabdal-Mansehra expressway, outdated electricity infrastructure and funding for small dams in the province. The next general election or the government-judiciary stand-off did not figure in the discussion, they said.

The ANP leaders said the prime minister ordered that a meeting to be presided over by him be convened. It would be attended among others by federal ministers for finance and communications to sort out the problem.

According to an official handout, Mr Ashraf told the ANP senators that he valued the support extended by their party to the PPP-led coalition government.

He said the government had always given due weight-age to the interest of its allies and would continue the policy of reconciliation.

The prime minister reiterated the commitment of the government to implement the package so that economic activities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa could be accelerated which would create employment opportunities in the province.
