CHAKWAL, Aug 24: A newly-wed couple died of suffocation caused by gas leakage on the second night of their marriage, sources told Dawn on Friday.

They said that Amir Hayat, a resident of Peera Fatehal village, was married to Atia Bibi on Wednesday, while friends and relatives enjoyed the walima reception on Thursday.

Later in the night when the couple was going to sleep they switched on a generator connected to gas line from their room.

On Friday when they did not come out of their room till late in the day the family members first called them from outside, but got no reply. They then broke open the door and were left in shock to find that Hayat and Atia had died of suffocation as the room was still filled with smell of leaking gas.

The couple was laid to rest amid moving scenes in the village graveyard.
