KARACHI: Two workers of the Awami National Party, a bystander and a senior party member were killed apparently in a targeted attack outside the latter’s house in the Frontier Colony area of SITE Town on Monday night, police said.

The shootings within the remit of the Pirabad police station sowed seeds of fear in the neighbourhood leading to markets closure in Frontier Colony, Banaras Chowk and Mominabad areas of Orangi Town amid reports of intermittent gunfire.

ANP workers Rehmat Ali aka Toor Jan and Zahid Khan aka Sura were sitting outside the house of a party office-bearer and former UC nazim, Amir Sardar, after Iftar when two to three men opened fire on them and walked away, said a senior police officer of the area.

Besides the three party men, a bystander, later identified as Bakht Zaman, sustained gunshot wounds, the police said.

All the four victims were rushed to a private hospital in North Nazimabad where three of them — Ali, Khan and Zaman — died soon after arrival, while the fourth victim, Sardar, died during treatment later, the police said, adding that their bodies were then shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities.

Earlier, Sindh ANP General Secretary Bashir Jan told Dawn that the condition of ANP central committee member Amir Sardar was stated to be critical. “He has sustained multiple bullet wounds,” he added.

While the police were not certain about the appearance of the attackers, a senior police officer of the area said that the incident seemed to be an act of targeted killing. The area police said that Ali and Khan had come to visit Sardar at his residence at Iftar.

They were sitting outside the house having tea after breaking their fast when they were attacked, the officials added.

“Frontier Colony is populated largely by Pakhtuns and it’s quite impossible for non-Pakhtun suspects to come into the colony and escape unnoticed after carrying out the killing,” said the senior police officer of the area.

Man held for killing relative

A brother-in-law of a young man was booked and arrested for killing the latter in the Jacob Lines area reportedly in a dispute over property on Monday, police said.

The officials added that Waqas, 22, son of Abbas, was shot dead in a house, situated behind a fuel station, during an altercation among family members over a property.

Brigade SHO Hymaun Khan said that Abbas later lodged an FIR (207/2012) under Section 302 (premeditated murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code and nominated Ilyas, Umair, Adeel, Waheed, Zia and Mohammad Ali in the FIR.

The police shifted the body to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities and arrested one of the suspects, Waheed, the victim’s brother-in-law, though the other five fled.

The SHO said that it was not yet clear as to who had shot at Waqas. The police were still interrogating Waheed, he added.

Man found shot dead

The body of an unidentified man bearing torture marks and gunshot wounds was found in Officer’s Colony within the remit of the Garden police station, officials said.

Stuffed in a gunny bag, the body had marks of drilling on different parts, said Garden SHO Naseeruddin Shah, adding that the victim had been shot in the chest and head.

The SHO said it seemed that the victim, in his late 20s, had been kidnapped and his body had been dumped after being subjected to severe torture.

They shifted the body to the Civil Hospital Karachi for medico-legal formalities. Later, it was moved to the Edhi morgue for want of identification, the police added.

Policeman attacked

A policeman posted at the central jail was critically wounded in a gun attack in a PIB Colony area on Monday, officials said.

They added that Jadal, 40, son of Lal, was passing through Martin Quarters in a rickshaw when armed men riding a motorcycle sprayed him with bullets.

The victim was rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where he was admitted for treatment, the police said, adding that he sustained three bullet wounds to his chest and neck.

The victim was a resident of Surjani Town and originally hailed from Pano Aqil, the police said.
