PESHAWAR, Dec 21: Mohammad Ahmed Aslam lifted the Under-14 singles crown when he overcame a tenacious Khurram Nazir in the COAS Khyber Cup Open tennis championship on Saturday.

In a hard-fought final Aslam overcame the loss of the first set to finally overpower Khurram 3-5, 6-3, 6-4.

Earlier Pakistan’s top ranked player Aqeel Khan and second seeded Asim Shafiq moved into next round scoring convincing victories.

Aqeel overwhelmed Wakil Khan 6-1 and 6-3 while Asim overpowered Mahmood Khan 6-4 and 6-3. National coach Rashid Malik also won his match against Aurangzeb 7-6 and 6-4.

Other winners inluded Irfanullah who beat atif Khan, 6-1, 6-3; Inam Gul defeated Inamullah, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3; Shehzad Khan rolled over Shahid Afridi, 6-2, 6-3; Shehzad Samad outlasted Munir Arshad 3-6, 6-3, 6-1; Shahid Khan edged out Kamran Khalil, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 and Fayyaz Khan outclassed Irfanullah 6-1, 6-3.

Under-18 semifinals: Tanvir Ashiq bt Sheikh Abdul Asghar 6-3, 6-4; Shahrukh Niazi bt Omer Latif Farmanullah 6-2, 6-4.

Under-14 final: Mohammad Ahmad Aslam bt Khurram Nazir 3-5, 6-3, 6-4

Men’s doubles: Aqeel Khan/Rashid Malik bt Omer Ayaz/Amjad Khan 6-4,7-5.
