PIETERMARITZBURG, Dec 21: Left-arm spinner Robin Peterson ripped through the Pakistani batters on Saturday to dismiss the tourists for 174 on the first day of their three-day match against South Africa ‘A’ at the Pietermaritzburg Oval.

When stumps were drawn half an hour early, South Africa ‘A’ had made 76 for two, just 98 runs behind Pakistan.

The 23-year-old Peterson took six for 72 as Pakistan’s disappointing tour continued.

Pakistan showed some fight near the end of their 57 overs when captain Waqar Younis, batting at 10, made 36 from 38 balls, hitting two huge sixes over mid-wicket.

David Terbrugge struck with his 10th ball to remove Salim Elahi, then Monde Zondeki had Younis Khan caught hooking to square leg, reducing the tourists to 19 for two.

Inzamam-ul-Haq made 25 from 35 balls before falling to a sharp chance at silly mid-off from to present Peterson with his first victim.

Peterson struck again just before the break to end Taufiq Umar’s 113-minute innings of 25.

The South African’s reply had an indifferent start but Jacques Rudolph scored 46 not out.—AFP
