KARACHI, Dec 21: Defending champions Karachi Whites enjoyed an excellent opening day in the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy National Cricket Championship when they bowled out Bahawalpur for 167 in their first innings at National Stadium here on Saturday.
By stumps, the home side had replied with 20 without loss with skipper Maisam Hasnain (14) and Agha Sabir (5) negotiating seven overs safely.
Having elected to bat after winning the toss, Bahawalpur made a reasonable start when they reached 117 for three. But Karachi Whites put them on the back foot as pace trio of Owais Athar, Nasir Khan and Rizwan Saeed dominated the proceedings.
The last seven wickets fell for the addition of just 50 runs. Ahsan Raza (31) and Kamran Hussain (30), Mohammad Rashid (27), Hasnain Raza (24) and Bilal Rana (22) were the main scorers for the visitors.
Left-armer Nasir Khan returned figures of three for 42 while his new ball partner Owais Athar claimed three for 55 and Rizwan Saeed two for 31.
Elsewhere, Allied Bank Limited (ABL) and Pak PWD were on top in their respective Group-II matches.
Former Test off-spinner and ABL skipper Arshad Khan captured four for 54 as Multan made just 158 in their first innings at Multan Cricket Stadium before openers Usman Tariq (33) and Bilal Asad (19) guided ABL to 54 without any loss.
Pak PWD made a great comeback against newcomers Dadu on a day when as many as 23 wickets fell at UBL Sports Complex.
Athar Laeeq, the ex-Pakistan and National Bank paceman, and Kashif Ali shared eight wickets between as Pak PWD were sent packing for 116 in their first essay. Only Saad Wasim (53 not out) batted with authority.
Dadu then found themselves all at sea an were bundled out for mere 66 in reply with medium-pacer Shakeel-ur-Rehman (five for 15 in 10.2 overs) doing most of the damage.
Pak PWD lost three second-innings wickets but closed the day with an overall lead of 115.
