SANGHAR, Aug 11: Police recovered the woman alleged to have been kidnapped from Karachi from a village near Sanghar on Saturday.

Later, she was produced before the media at Mangli police station and then handed over to Khairpur police to be produced before the Sindh High Court, Sukkur Circuit Bench in suo motu hearing of her alleged abduction.

The 22-year-old woman said that she lived at Altaf Chowk near Koranagi Crossing in Karachi and her aunt Mariam introduced her to Mehmood who she said had proposed her (the girl). A deal was struck wherein the family of the girl were paid Rs80,000 in lieu of marriage against the promised Rs1,60,000. They accepted the money as it was needed for the treated of the girl’s mother.

Mehmood brought her to Sanghar 10 days ago and forcibly married her to an old man, Dawood Gaho, she said while denying any torture. However, the woman wished to live with her mother in Karachi.

DSP Sharif Shar said the woman was recovered from a village where Gaho community reside. No arrests could be made because police could not find Dawood or any male member of the family.

Court took suo motu notice of the girl’s kidnapping after news of her abduction appeared in Sindhi newspapers. It directed the DIG Sukkur, SSP Khaiprur, DSP Nara and SHO Khenwari to recover the girl and produce Usman Gaho and three others before the court on August 13.

A rights activist Mohammad Qazafi Tanoli told Dawn that that Mangli police arrested Usman Gaho a day earlier but then released him on condition that he would hand over the woman to them.
