PESHAWAR, 21 Dec: For almost eight years not a single FIR has been lodged with the only Women’s Police Station in the city. The strength of the workforce is 70.

This police station, which was established in 1994, has six rooms with five policewomen - which include DSP, SHO and ASIs.

The DSP, Musharraf Azam, told Dawn that she has not been assigned or involved in any criminal investigation so far.

In 1994, the government established separate police stations for women, but their performance has been not up to the mark.

However, they say that they are being discriminated against by their male colleagues.

Not only that, even the victimised women do not come to this police station because of social taboos.

“Women do come to us and share their domestic problems but they won’t register an FIR with us for fear of landing into more trouble,” she lamented.

The Women’s Police Station, situated in a remote corner of the city has proved to be of no significant assistance to women.

“The women police force has graduate ASIs and is ready to shoulder any responsibility alongside their male colleagues.” said DSP Musharraf.

The DSP has not been provided a mobile van which everyone of her counterparts has it.

The ASIs, who have been in service for the last six years, are still not sure whether they will be considered for promotions; male ASIs, recruited at the same time, have been promoted.

The women police force is engaged in raids, computer cell, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), and escorting woman criminals to court for hearing.
