PESHAWAR, Aug 10: A meeting of Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, was held here on Friday, wherein its Director General Shehzad Khan Bangash briefed the representatives of international organisations about an incident of stampede at Jalozai camp in which a man lost his life and a woman was injured during distribution of hygiene kits.

He informed the participants that the incident occurred due to mismanagement and rush of displaced Bara people where they charged each other and one of them resorted to firing, killing a man and injuring a woman. He said that the woman had been relocated to the camp after medical treatment.

The meeting was attended by representatives of international welfare, social and donor organisations.

Mr Bangash told them that owing to great number of displaced families, the authority had decided to enhance the number of points for distribution of relief items on the basis of tribes to avoid any mishap.

He also sought the assistance of international organisations in this regard and said that a special training of camp administration officials and security staff was also being organised.

The PDMA DG appealed to the displaced people to show patience during distribution or relief goods.

The international donor organisations on the occasion assured the authority of uninterrupted supply of edible and other relief items to the camp people. -- APP

OUR BUREAU ADDS: Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F), Khyber Agency, has condemned the firing incident at Jalozai camp in which a young man was killed and a woman suffered bullet injuries during distribution of food items.

Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Friday, Khyber Agency JUI-F deputy amir Shamsuddin Afridi demanded punishment to those who opened fire on the IDPs.

He called for an end to discriminatory treatment with people of Bara and demanded of Governor Masood Kausar to order investigation into the incident and bring the culprits to justice.

Flanked by other IDPs, he said that women should be given respect instead of forcing them to stand in long queues for hours to get a bag of food. He called for improving management of the distribution process.

The JUI-F leader said that the government should ensure an end to violence, as the IDPs had already suffered a lot while vacating their homes and localities and were spending harsh life in camps.

He also called for giving financial compensation to affected people of Bara operation and initiating planning for early repatriation to their areas.
