KARACHI, Aug 6: Two men were gunned down in Jehanabad within the remit of the Pak Colony police station on Monday.

It was suspected that the killings were in retaliation for Saturday’s killing of Johar Magsi, a suspected gangster targeted in the same area, SSP-West Amir Farooqui said.

Police said the two men, killed at around 7am, were identified as Abdul Aleem, 54, and his nephew Liaquat Ali, 30.

They said Liaquat was a watchman at the Sabzi Mandi and Aleem was a pick-up driver at the fruit market. Both men were heading to work on Monday morning when assailants riding a motorcycle targeted them.

The police said the victims suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died before they could be taken to hospital. The bodies were shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi for medico-legal formalities.

Following the killings, tension gripped the Jehanabad area. Additional police and Rangers were deployed to tackle the situation.

The SHO of Pak Colony police station said that Johar Magsi was killed by assailants in Magsi Mohallah in Jehanabad. He was an associate of the Rehman Dakait group, he added.

It was being suspected that the Saturday killings were carried out by a suspect associated with the Arshad Pappu gang and relative of the victims, Aleem and Liaquat.

The police said they believed that the Monday morning killing was carried out to avenge Saturday’s killing.

Policeman gunned down A policeman was killed in Lyari on Monday evening.

Police said the incident took place in Moosa Lane, near Kausar Masjid, where police constable Mohammad Siddique was shot dead by gunmen riding a motorcycle. The victim was sitting at a paint shop near the mosque when he was targeted, the police added.

The constable was posted at the Anti-Extremist Cell of the Criminal Investigation Department headed by SP Aslam Khan.

Police shifted the body to the Civil Hospital Karachi for medico-legal formalities. The victim was a resident of Moosa Lane and father of two children.

SP Aslam Khan visited the mortuary to examine the body of the slain police constable. At the time of the incident, the slain police constable was performing surveillance duty in the Baghdadi area. He had also played an important role during the last Lyari operation, SP Aslam Khan said.

The funeral prayer of the slain police constable was offered at the Garden police headquarters on Monday night.

According to official data, more than 50 police personnel have been gunned down in the city during the seven months of the current year.

Bandit killed At least one suspected bandit was killed when three bandits were shot at by police during an encounter in Sohrab Goth on Monday night.

Police said the suspects were fleeing after snatching valuables from people in the Sohrab Goth area when a police party chased them, prompting a shootout.

Later, one of the bandits was found dead near the storm drain under the Sohrab Goth bridge while the police were searching for what they believed the body of a second suspect, SDPO Iftikhar Lodhi said. The third suspect escaped, he added.

At least six cellphones and a pistol were found on the dead, SDPO Lodhi said. The dead could not be identified immediately.

Young man’s body found The unidentified body of a young man bearing torture marks was fished out from a storm drain in North Nazimabad on Monday.

Police said the body was found in the drain in Block-N, and the victim was killed around two days ago. The dead, in his early 20s, appeared to be an Afghan.

The body was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities. Later it was shifted to the Edhi morgue for want of identification.
