Cholistan mini-dam near completion

BAHAWALPUR, Dec 19: The first-ever mini-dam in Cholistan is likely to be completed some time next week.

The dam is being constructed on the desert branch canal near Chak 3-DR under the supervision of the irrigation department. The Rs8 million dam will be 700 feet long, as many feet wide and 19 feet high. It will cover four acres and have a storage capacity of 191 cusecs.

According to experts, the dam could irrigate about 1,000 acres and meet the water needs of Cholistanis and their herds living around it.

Another two dams are being constructed on the desert branch canal at Ladamsar and Chak 117-DNB. About 90 per cent work on these dams has been completed.

NAZIM: District Nazim Tariq Cheema has expressed his dissatisfaction over the poor performance of the agriculture department.

Presiding over a meeting, the Nazim said that government officials should discharge their duties honestly and provide proper guidance to farmers. He urged the officials to undertake tours of rural areas for the purpose.

HANGING POSTPONED: The hanging of the sixth convict in Chishtian ASI murder case, Abbas, has also been postponed for three weeks following his appeal to the president.

Mr Abbas was to be hanged on Thursday, having been sentenced to death by the Bahawalpur ATC in a dacoity and murder case.

It may be recalled here that the execution of five other convicts in this case was postponed the other day on the orders of apex court.

KIDNAPPED: Two unidentified armed men kidnapped one Tariq Mohammad Ashraf and hijacked his car (BRD-119) outside his house in Satellite Town here. Baghdadul Jadid police have registered the case.
