GILGIT, Dec 18: The quake-affected people of the Astore Valley criticizing the public representatives and the NGOs have said that they were not getting the relief goods.

A representative delegation of the quake-affected people of the area speaking to reporters here at a press conference on Wednesday said that they did not get the relief goods distributed by various NGOs reported in the media.

Advocate Ahsan Ali, leading the delegation, urged the government to immediately rehabilitate the quake-affected people of the Astore valley on permanent basis as the refugees could not brave the harsh weather in the substandard tents.

He demanded of the government to grant at least Rs300 per day to each refugee as subsistence allowance and Rs1 million as compensation to those killed in the quakes.

Mr Ali called for investigations into the alleged irregularities and mismanagement in distribution of the relief goods donated by various NGOs.

He criticized the public representatives for their indifferent attitude towards the displaced people and said that the so-called members would have frequently visited the area if it had been the electioneering time.

The delegation demanded restoration of the Astore road as it was directly affecting over 70,000 people. It said that the snowfall had started and if the road was not restored forthwith, whole of the population would have to face starvation.

The team demanded to streamline the relief activities and involve the local action committees.
