SUKKUR, Dec 18: The people of various areas of the city staged a demonstration on Wednesday to protest against non- provision of clean drinking water.
Most of the protestors belonged to areas in and around New Pind, including Chachar Muhalla, Darzi Muhalla, Brohi Muhalla and Waseer Muhalla.
The protesters, led by Maulana Ubaidullah Bhutto, Rafiullah Bozdar and Ali Sher Panwer, also staged a sit-ins at the Clock Tower and the local press club.
Speakers, including Ubaidullah Bhutto, said that the people of New Pind had been facing problems regarding supply of clean drinking water throughout the year but the taluka Nazim and other officials of the municipal corporation had so far done nothing in this regard.
The protesters threatened to besiege the office of the taluka and the district Nazimeen if steps were not taken for provision of clean drinking water.
CIVIC AGENCIES: Sukkur small traders, comprising 35 trade organizations, on Wednesday criticized the civic agencies for having failed to keep the city clean.
Complaining of increasingly unhygienic conditions in the city, they said that heaps of garbage were visible at various places.
The president of the Sukkur Small Traders, Haji Haroon Memon, in a statement issued here, said that the people were disappointed by the new district government system.
He said that Sukkur was being meted out a stepmotherly treatment despite being the 3rd largest city of Sindh, adding that gutters were overflowing at many places and the sewerage water was flowing into houses and shops.
Memon said that this had caused the spread of various diseases besides the city’s dirty outlook was hindering traders from other cities from visiting the city.
He urged the Chief Minister of Sindh, Ali Mohammad Maher, to expedite civic and other development activities to enable the people to heave a sigh of relief.
HEARING: The hearing of the murder case of the Kandhkot correspondent of the daily Kawish, Shahid Soomro, was held at the anti-terrorism court here on Wednesday, and Jan 4, 2003 was fixed as the next date of hearing.
All the accused in the case, including the brother of the PPP MPA, Mehboob Ali Bijarani, Abdul Waheed, and Mohammad Ali Bijarani, were present in the court.
A large number of journalist from Sukkur attended the court’s proceedings.
A group of the Bijarani clan threatened the journalists for taking keen interest in the hearing of the murder case.
The journalists also accused them of issuing threats of dire consequences if they did not desist from taking interest in the case.
Meanwhile, an emergency meeting of the Sukkur Press Club was held which took serious notice of the threats extended by the members of the Bijarani clan to the journalists.
The meeting urged the court, the chief minister of Sindh and police authorities to take serious notice of the threats
In the meantime, a resolution to this effect was also adopted.
The resolution strongly condemned the threats of the Bijaranis, saying that they (the Bijaranis) had flouted the sanctity of the court.
The resolution also urged the Sindh government to take steps to protect to the working journalists in view of the incident.
GUTTED: The Chaudhry Cotton factory caught fire and was reduced to ashes on Wednesday in Mirpur Mathelo.
The cause of fire could not be ascertained.
