CHITTAGONG (Bangladesh), Dec 16: Pacemen Pedro Collins and Darren Powell claimed three wickets each as the West Indies took control of the second Test against Bangladesh here on Monday.
The visitors were 38-1 after dismissing Bangladesh for 194 just after tea. Opener Chris Gayle (10) and Ramnaresh Sarwan (14) were unbeaten when bad light forced an early stoppage of play.
Left-armer Collins finished with 3-60 and Powell with 3-51 as the Bangladeshi batsmen failed to apply themselves, either perishing caught in the slips or to bad shots.
Seamers Jermaine Lawson and Vasbert Drakes took two wickets each.
Middle-order batsman Sanwar Hossain top-scored with 36 as the home side failed to justify captain Khaled Mashud’s decision to bat first on the M.A. Aziz Stadium track.
A 64-run stand for the fourth wicket between Sanwar and Mohammad Ashraful (28) lent some respectability to the total after openers Hannan Sarkar and Al-Shahriar had added 43 runs earlier in the day.
Bangladesh made three changes to their side from the first Test in Dhaka, bringing in Al-Shahriar, Sanwar Hossain and Manjurul Islam in place of Anwar Hossain, Aminul Islam and Naimur Rahman.
Bangladesh had lost the first Test by a whopping innings and 310 runs. They also lost a three-match one-day series against the West Indies 2-0 after the first match was washed out.
Bangladesh are struggling to justify their Test status, having lost 15 of 16 matches since their induction into the Test arena two years ago.
