GUJRANWALA, Dec 16: Seven aspirants have filed their nomination papers for PP-103 byelections.
The returning officer on Monday started scrutiny of the nomination papers which will continue till Wednesday.
Those who filed their papers are Akmal Saif Chattha (PML-C), ex-MPAs Haji Shaukat Hayat Chattha (PML-Q) and Chaudhry Muhammad Arif Chattha (PPP) and Rao Allah Rakha Shahzad, Abdul Rasheed Rehmani, Ijaz Ahmad and Muhammad Abdullah Irfan.
The PML-Q had supported Hamid Nasir Chattha in the general election, and political pundits are expecting that the ruling party will support his nominee in bypolls to be held on Jan 15.
A close contest is expected between Akmal Saif Chattha and Shaukat Hayat Chattha.
NO SALARY: Over 1,300 teachers recruited some four months ago in various educational institutions of the district have been deprived of their salaries for want of verification of their certificates.
At a meeting held here on Monday, teachers said due to non-payment of salaries, they were facing many problems.
They demanded that the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Gujranwala, chairman and the district education officer should accelerate the process of verification of their certificates so that they could get their salaries.
AWARDED RI: The additional district and sessions judge on Monday awarded 14-year imprisonment with a fine of Rs280,000 to Ijaz Ahmad in a murder case.
According to the prosecution, the convict had killed his wife, Nasim, over a domestic dispute in Saleem Colony on July 11, 2001.
ARRESTED: The railways police claimed on Monday having arrested one of the four accused who had attacked Tezgam and got freed a man in custody.
The railways IG told Dawn that Arif Husain and accomplices got freed Ghulam Nabi of Gujrat from the custody of the Rawalpindi railway police a few days ago. They also snatched a gun from a constable after injuring him.
He said raids were being conducted for the arrest of the remaining accused.
Meanwhile, the district police claim to have arrested 18 proclaimed offenders besides several gangs of dacoits and recovered illicit arms and looted goods from their possession.
At a briefing here on Monday, the SSP said seven pistols, three revolvers, two guns, as many cars, four motorcycles and other goods were recovered from their possession.
MURDERED: Two people were murdered and six others injured by their rivals in various parts of city on Monday.
Zahid of Shaheenabad was sitting in his shop when Imtiaz came there and opened fire on him following an exchange of hot words. He suspected that Zahid had relations with his wife.

REMAND: The anti-terrorism court No 2 on Monday remanded Asif Siddiq, involved in the killing of PPP leader Khalid Humayun, in police custody for three days.
Asif and his brother, Kashif, had fled to Iran after killing the PPP leader some two weeks ago. They were arrested by the border police while entering Pakistan.
Police are conducting raids for the arrest of other accused, former MPA Mehr Mohammad Saleem and Haji Siddiq.
