MULTAN, Dec 16: PML-N parliamentary leader in the National Assembly, Makhdoom Javed Hashmi, has demanded implementation on the Hamoodur Rehman Commission report to penalize all those responsible for the Dhaka fall.
Speaking at a press conference to commemorate what he said the darkest day in the country’s history, he said further tragedies could only be avoided by punishing the people who caused irreparable loss to the country.
He said the geographical boundaries of the country had always shrunk in the military rules. The country lost Run of Kutch area and its rivers during the Ayub period, Yahaya Khan spearheaded the Dhaka fall and Siachin went to India during Zia’s rule, he said.
“If other nations can fix the responsibility and announce punishments to their national culprits then why shouldn’t Pakistan do the same,” he questioned.
Mr Hashmi said the then generals had surrendered before India instead of accepting the will of the people which they expressed in the 1970 general election.
He regretted that the present military government was repeating the same blunder and had installed puppet governments in the centre and provinces after the most ‘rigged elections’ of the country.
The situation in Sindh was critical where the regime had cobbled a government of ‘unlikely partners’ to stop the government of a majority group, he said. “The generals seem to have learnt no lesson from the history,” he regretted.
The PML-N leader demanded that Pervez Musharraf should immediately relinquish the charge of presidency for the larger interest of the country.
When asked why didn’t he call for his resignation as the Chief of Army Staff, Mr Hashmi asserted that he had been retired by the then chief executive in 1999 from the office of the COAS. “In fact Mr Musharraf has been possessing offices of the president and COAS unlawfully,” he added.
