MIRPURKHAS, Dec 16: The closure of 120 out of the 163 water channels in the command area of the Nara Canal deepened the water crisis in the interior of Sindh.

The situation in the areas supplied by the Nara Canal, which emanated from the Sukkur Barrage, aggravated because of the shortfall in the water supply.

Only 6,770 cusecs of water was being released because of the shortage and this is affecting the supply at the tail-end of the canal.

It has been learnt that the irrigation department has extended the rotation programme to include the Jamrao, Mithrao and Tharparkar divisions.

In the past, the Abadgars have held protest demonstrations in the district for proper supply of water for their crops. Now they are likely to suffer huge losses affecting the production of sugarcane, wheat, onion, vegetables etc.

Currently, only two channels are supplying water to the reservoirs of the public health department because of the present situation.

The Nara Canal supplies water to six districts: Sanghar, Khairpur, Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad, Tharparkar, and Badin.

The Abadgars and growers have expressed fears regarding suffering huge losses if the situation did not improve in a week.
