Between frames: Barfi

Published July 11, 2012

As soon as Priyanka Chopra tweeted about her upcoming romantic comedy directed by Anurag Basu, it was all over the social networking websites – from critics to fans, from actors and writers ... everyone was sharing it. The film also stars Ranbir Kapoor and Ileana D'Cruz in the lead roles. It is expected to be released on 14 September, 2012.

The bar that Bollywood has set has really gone up each year – especially in terms of movies that were produced at the end of last year and beginning of this year for e.g Rockstar, Kahani etc. Barfi which initially seemed like a silent film to the viewers, is about a hearing and speech impaired boy named “Murphy” played by Ranbhir Kapoor while Priyanka “Jhilmil” is playing a mentally challenged girl, but the film is not silent, contrary to what its first trailer suggests.

Director Anurag Basu corrected the audience in his interview to the Times of India saying “It’s not that there are no dialogues in the entire film. I did not think that I will make a silent film with no dialogues from beginning to end. Those who can speak have dialogues. I wanted that everyone should understand the story."

"There are fewer dialogues in the film and that is the specialty of the film. I had good actors who without saying anything could convey the story...Then nothing like it. Illena has few dialogues," he added.—Eefa Khalid
