ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain has said that the dual nationals should be conditionally allowed to take part in the elections but no dual national should be allowed to hold any public office.

He was speaking to media representatives at the PML House following a reception held to honour the party's finance secretary and special assistant to the prime minister, Imtiaz Ahmed Ranjha.

“The dual nationals should be allowed to take part in elections but they would have to cancel their dual nationality before taking oath for any government office,” he said while responding to questions raised by media about the PML-Q stance over dual nationality bill.

Shujaat said that since the matter was pending with the Senate standing committee, his party would convey its stance in the committee.

About general elections, Shujaat said that the next polls would be held in year 2013 and the PML-Q would take part in the elections as an alliance with its coalition partners.

“We would go for seat-adjustment with the PPP in next elections,” he asserted.

Lauding the government's decision to appoint a consensus chief election commissioner (CEC), Shujaat said that the name of Justice (retd) Fakharuddin G Ebrahim was submitted by the PML-N which was accepted by the coalition government. He said it was wrong for the PML-N leaders to claim credit for naming the CEC as the new CEC was a consensus nominee.

The PML-Q president said that reopening the Nato supply routes was a consensus decision by the coalition government as this was about decades-old relations with over 50 states a part of Nato.

PML-Q Secretary-General Mushahid Hussain Sayed, on the occasion, said that the US had lost its war and its forces had no reason for conducting drone attacks inside Pakistan. He urged the government to take a strong stance against drone operation.

PML-Q was not a family enterprise and rather it was the party for workers. He said that the appointment of Imtiaz Ranjha reflected the commitment of the party leadership for the welfare of the party workers.
