WATER is the most important ingredient of human life; without it human survival is impossible. However, the winter capital of Balochistan, Gwadar, is facing an extreme shortage of water.

The Ankara Kaur dam is the only source of water supply to the city. There have been no rains here which has caused acute water shortage. Due to this, the residents of the city are facing many problems.

Moreover, the city’s deputy commissioner has expressed that water would be supplied to the city through tankers.

However, many people claim that the water supply through tankers is for a short-term and insufficient.

Supplying water to the city from the Mirani dam is illogical as it will cost too much and will take a lot of time.

I request the authorities concerned to take immediate measures to resolve the issue before the situation gets worse.

Insufficient supply

THIS is apropos of Parvez Baloch’s letter ‘Water crisis in Gwadar’ (June 8). Gwadar is going through a tough time due to lack of drinkable water.

Being dependant on merely one dam, the people of Gwadar are facing several problems. The Ankara Kaur dam was built in 1993 in order to provide water to the inhabitants.

Likewise, 50 per cent of Gwadar’s population relies on Ankara Kaur dam. Unfortunately, its water level has decreased to a dangerous level.

According to an estimate, Gwadar city is supplied nearly 2 million gallons of water every four or five days, against the requirement of 3.5 million, which unfortunately, forces the people to go to far-flung areas to seek drinkable water.

However, owing to lack of interest by the authorities concerned clean drinking water remains a distant dream for people on Gwadar.

I appeal to the authorities concerned to look into the matter at the earliest so that the problems of the people could be solved.

Scarcity in Zhob

WATER shortage has hit various parts of Zhob, causing immense inconvenience. The residents have been suffering from water shortage for the last three weeks, while scorching heat is adding to their woes and miseries.

The situation is aggravating each day; even drinking water is not available as water consumption in summer has increased.

Anger and frustration because of water shortage force people to come out on the streets and protest, but the authorities concerned are not interested in resolving the issue.

The residents of Mandokhail Abad, Sheikh town, Nasarabad, Islamyar, Sherani Bazar, Ganj Muhalla and Pirzadah Colony have not been supplied water for the last 18 days.

The authorities concerned have failed to ensure smooth supply of water. The public health department officials are mum over the situation. Despite a number of complaints that have been registered, the situation has not improved.

The manholes are lying open, and filth gushes out of them. People have no option except to drink filthy and contaminated water that poses serious threats to their health.

An official of the PHE department said that the demand for water increases in summer, and they are trying their best to cope with the situation but misuse of water is the major obstacle.
