KARACHI, July 5: Five people, including an activist of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi, were gunned down in different parts of the city on Thursday, said police.

MQM worker Mohammad Farooq, 30, aka Kana was killed in a drive-by shooting a few streets from the Landhi residence of the party chairman, said a senior police officer.

The victim was taken to a nearby private hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, said an official at the Awami Colony police station.

He added that the body was then shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a post-mortem examination. He said the victim had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

“The victim had recently relocated from Sherpao Colony to his old home in Landhi No 6,” said SP Shah Faisal Latif Siddiqui.

He added that the shooting was carried out a few streets from the Landhi residence of MQM-H chief Afaq Ahmad.

Following the murder, tension gripped the locality amid intermittent firing.

MQM spokesman Khalid Naqashbandi said that Farooq was an activist of unit 80 of the party’s organisational structure. He condemned the incident, terming it a targeted killing on political grounds.

Man killed in Garden

Earlier in the morning, a young man was killed on Ghulam Husain Qasim Road in a Garden locality, said police.

Nasir, 26, aka Munna was gunned down outside his apartment building near Yaseen Manzil Ramswami by armed men riding a motorbike, said a duty officer of the Garden police station.

The victim was rushed to the Civil Hospital Karachi, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The officer quoted hospital sources as saying that he had sustained a gunshot wound to his head.

The police said that the young man was not associated with any political party. They claimed that an investigation was under way to find out a motive for the killing.

Till Thursday evening, nobody had turned up at the Garden police station to lodge the case.

Cable operator gunned down

A young man associated with a cable networking system was gunned down in New Karachi, said police.

They added that Amir Khan, 30, was shot dead near Haroon Apartments in Sector 5C-2 of New Karachi.

“The victim was shot at thrice with a 9mm pistol,” said SP Gulberg Tanveer Alam Odho. He added that the police collected three spent bullet casings found at the crime scene

The SP said that some business-related rivalry was suspected as a motive for the killing, though an investigation was under way to take into account other factors as well.

The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Father, son shot dead

In Machhar Colony, a father and his son were killed and two others wounded late Thursday night, said police.

The officials added that Siraj Noor, 30, was sitting outside his house where armed men riding a motorbike fired at him. As they were about to flee, they spotted the victim’s father, Haji Noor, 55, returning home. They opened fire on him and escaped. In the firing, two passers-by were also hit by bullets.

The victims were rushed to the Civil Hospital Karachi where Siraj Noor and his father were pronounced dead, while the two passers-by, Khalid and Sohail, were admitted for treatment.

SSP District West Amir Farooqui said that police suspected involvement of Lyari gangsters in the incident.

Two held for killing man

Earlier, a young man associated with the fisheries business was shot dead near Saddam Chowk in Machhar Colony.

The police said that Moinuddin, 30, was killed over personal enmity and claimed to have arrested the killers. “We have arrested two suspects said to be involved in the firing,” said SSP Farooqui.
