RAWALPINDI, July 1: The body of a young orphan girl who committed suicide by jumping into Leh Nullah on Saturday – apparently after failing to buy expensive books and notebooks for her young siblings – was recovered from the nullah on Sunday, police said.

Farzand Bibi 17, a resident of Gulistan Colony whose father had died some four months ago was the eldest of her four sisters and three brothers.

On Saturday afternoon, she went to market to purchase some books and notebooks for her younger sisters and brothers but as she did not have enough money, she returned home dejected.

Police while quoting the family of the victim said that as she returned home empty-handed, she looked extremely worried and gloomy.

By the sunset, she left the house and later committed suicide by jumped into Leh Nullah.

The rescuers started searching for her body soon after the incident was reported by some residents but as darkness prevailed the search operation had to be suspended. On Sunday, the rescuers traced her body and fished it out. It was later handed over to the family.

Police said the abject poverty seemed to be the motive behind the suicide.
