MIAMI, Dec 14: Former heavyweight champion Trevor Berbick has been deported for the second time in five years.

Berbick was sent to Jamaica on Monday after being detained for at least a month, Barbara Gonzalez, a spokeswoman for the US Immigration and Naturalization Service said Friday.

Gonzalez said Berbick was arrested in the Miami area on a traffic violation earlier this year, but did not know the exact location or date of the arrest. Local police departments did not immediately return phone calls seeking details on the arrest.

Berbick was placed in INS custody after the arrest when officials determined he illegally re-entered the country after being deported to Canada in 1997, Gonzalez said. She did not know how or when Berbick slipped back into the United States.

Berbick spent a decade living in South Florida before being deported the first time.

In 1981, he beat an aging Muhammad Ali. Four years later, he won the WBC heavyweight title on a decision over Pinklon Thomas. The following year, he was dethroned in a second round knockout by Mike Tyson.—AFP
