PESHAWAR, June 19: Leaders of different political parties on Tuesday welcomed the Supreme Court decision disqualifying Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani as prime minister, terming it a historic verdict.

Shaukat Yousufzai, political advisor to PTI chairman Imran Khan, said that this was a historic decision that would help ensure the rule of law and supremacy of constitution in the country.

“The decision will help prevent the citizens from committing contempt of court in future,” he said and added that the Supreme Court was one of the prestigious institutions, which was striving for implementation of the Constitution.

Mr Yousufzai also praised the apex court for initiating several suo motu actions against widespread corruption in government departments. He said that the credit for disqualification of Mr Gilani went to the PTI, which had moved the court for implementation of its decision in this regard.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz senior vice-president Amir Muqam said that his party’s struggle would continue till the return of billions of dollars from the Swiss banks to Pakistan.

In a statement here on Tuesday, Mr Muqam said that the government had started confrontation with the judiciary from day one, but it was the PML-N that always supported judges in the national interest. He alleged that the government had broken all records of corruption and made life of people miserable by increasing prices of daily-use items.

He claimed that the PML-N was the sole party fighting for the rights of downtrodden with least interest to come into power.

He said that people were well aware of massive corruption by the rulers, who would face defeat in coming general election.

PML-N legal cell (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) chairman Khwaja Aurangzeb also praised the court verdict and described it as an important step for the future of judiciary and the country.
